I know this week's episode is not properly timed with previously aired photo essays, but there is a reason.
Expatriate Wiscasseteers have come out of the bushes to remind me that this column runs weekly for the Boothbay Register AND The Wiscasset Newspaper. So maybe it would be nice to “focus” up river a bit!
And the cry for fair and balanced was heard! Therefore, without further delay, may I share another image from the same flight that produced the view of Boothbay Harbor seen here two weeks ago. After all, sooner or later we all drive through Wiscasset.
I honestly didn't realize how closely tied Wiscasset and the Boothbay region were. Sports rivalries and mutual grumblings about traffic snarls given, there are a lot of people down here who came from up there and vice versa.
It's my oversight. I fly from Wiscasset. If not Wiscasset, I'd have to go to Brunswick, Richmond, Owl's Head or Rockland to get a plane and secure a pilot. That's complicated. Nothing against any of those places, it's just easier to fly out of Wiscasset. Doesn't make any sense to go there to get here.
I did do some work up in the Whitefield area on the same flight — lots of fields for emergency landings, but not many places to take off from, that I know of. There was the “Flying Farmer” over in Dresden.
I went in and out of there a few times years ago with John Andrews — not sure we were invited. John didn't seem to care.
So, I hope all my Wiscasset friends enjoy this view although I'm sure not everyone will — seldom please everyone. It's the thought that counts. Please note that traffic is moving along nicely on the bridge and that Richard Latter is “in the dooryard” messing with something.
