If you look very closely you will not see any portion of today's photo that resembles a blue moon!
There was a choice. Go to see a "Barbie" movie. Stay home with "Killer" the wonder dog, or find a blue moon.
Well, one thing I can say about my choices is this: I grew up with three wonderful younger sisters, and they each had a very substantial collection of Barbie stuff, which pretty much did it for me with the whole Barbie thing. So, that choice was out, although I have heard that the movie has many socially redeeming qualities. No need for me to acknowledge. I will not participate in this conversation due to pre existing experience.
The option to stay home with Killer appealed to me, but after several romps around the living room and a crash into the potted geranium plant, I figured it was time to head out for an excursion.
So, we hopped into the bug mobile and headed for one of my favorite haunts, the Cape Newagen town dock. Such a beautiful place, especially this time of year as the sun begins to slip lower and further south. But when we got to the dock, there was a gathering of a dozen or so people milling about, some with tripods, others with the L.L. Bean insignia outfits. I left Killer in the car because there was no need for her enthusiastic explosions, and subsequently no need for me to have a panic attack because she just knocked over a Beaner or sent a tripod, with or without camera, into the drink. And she is very capable of all of said maneuvers.
I avoid crowds but I did ask what was everyone waiting for. I knew it was not the famous Portland Ferry that some have been told runs regularly to and from the city. "Waiting for the Blue Moon" was the response in unison. "Oh" said I. "Well, good luck with that." I headed for my spot under the pier where the sunlight interacts with water ripples and reflects whatever happens to be in the sky. No moon available in that area.
I was not disappointed. The water had just the right motion, the sun was perfectly aligned at an angle that reflected and refracted. There was a beautiful pink afterglow coming from the east which mixed with the remains of a blue sky and the lack of light on ripple tops. I believe, via overheard comments leaking down from above, that most on the pier above me thought I was a bit weird, which I would have happily confirmed. I love ripple-reflected sunlight and the resulting configurations.
I don't know how the moon photos turned out. Usually there are loads of post-moon images on the internet with the moon behind a steeple or a church or a town or a ship, but that takes a special lens and homework, neither of which interest me. I'm not looking for the cover photo on the "Blue Moon Digest." I'm happy with knowing that I missed the "Barbie" movie and that Killer did no damage to anything or anyone. But, we did miss the Portland ferry!
